A capability pathway to subjective economic well-being: Looking beyond materialism

•The effect of sociological variables on SEWB is not well-understood in extant research.•We find that upward movement in IOM is found to have a positive impact on SEWB.•This relationship holds, irrespective of changes in household material assets.•This challenges the importance given to material assets acquisition in improving SEWB.
