Scenario assessment for producing methanol through carbon capture and utilization technologies considering regional characteristics

•Optimal social implementation scenarios of producing methanol by CCU technology was evaluated.•The regional characteristics of CCU were determined by process simulation and carbon footprint.•Direct MeOH synthesis by carbon hydrogenation showed the greatest CO2 reduction potential.•The results of this study can contribute to create the guidelines of CCU evaluation.
