•Two stages of mineralization are identified in the Xiaotongchang deposit.•Syngenetic hydrothermal mineralization occurred at ca. 256 Ma.•Materials of basalt-hosted Cu deposit mainly originated from the Emeishan basalts.•A simple model of basalt-hosted copper deposit is proposed in the ELIP.
