Moving and improving in safety-critical systems: Impacts of head-mounted displays on operator mobility, performance, and situation awareness

•HMD impacts on expert operators (n = 211) were explored in a safety-critical system.•HMD information improved operator performance, situation awareness, and mobility.•Improved mobility was associated with improved operator threat avoidance.•Links between mobility, performance and situation awareness not previously explored.
