•SsMYB1 was positively correlated with anthocyanin biosynthesis during leaf coloration in Chinese tallow.•SsMYB1 plays a critical role in anthocyanin biosynthesis by activating the SsDFR1 and SsANS.•SsbHLH1 physically interacted with SsMYB1 to enhance anthocyanin biosynthesis.
