•The distribution and enrichment characteristics of Cd in fine PM were studied.•Abundant Ti-rich particles were identified in the PM1.•The major processes governing Ti-rich particles formation were investigated.•The concentration of Cd was intimately related with Ti in the fine PM.•The mechanism of Cd/TiO2 interaction was explored experimentally.
