Responses of maize with different growth periods to heat stress around flowering and early grain filling

•Daily maximum temperature during flowering dramatically reduced maize kernel number.•There are heat – tolerant and – sensitive maize hybrids for long – and short – season maize.•Long – season maize shows a higher heat tolerance than short – season maize in total.•A proper cross between tropical and temperate germplasms can increase maize heat tolerance.
