Vibration drying of lignite based on the thermal fragmentation property and its prediction model

•A novel lignite vibrating screening and drying system was proposed.•Fragmentation of lignite particles reduced the required drying time.•Vibration promoted heat and mass transfer efficiency and lignite fragmentation.•Higher drying rate led to larger moisture gradient among particles of different sizes.
