Cerium speciation in silicate glasses: Structure-property relationships

•Reduced Ce species are favoured with an increase in the degree of melt polymerization.•Cerium preferentially links to the silicate network.•Photoluminescence properties cannot be tailored by merely adjusting the bulk chemistry.•We propose an alternative approach for quantifying the different Ce species in glasses.
