•2-min step test (2MST) is reliable in PAD patients.•2MST was significantly correlated with the number of steps achieved in six-minute walk test (6MWT).•2MST promoted lower cardiovascular stress than 6MWT.•The proportion of patients that reported claudication symptoms were similar between 2MST and 6MWT.
