Study on the Performance of a Long Cylinder-Electrostatic Cyclone Demister

In order to improve the separation performance of a cyclone demister for small droplets and effectively prevent the electrostatic demister from corona occlusion, the cyclone demister is combined with an electrostatic demister to form an electrostatic-cyclone demister. After the verification of numerical simulation with experimental data of the pressure drop of the cyclone, the effect of inlet velocity and the ratio of cylinder length to diameter on the separation performance of droplets with various sizes were investigated by numerical simulation. Results show that the separation efficiency of the electrostatic cyclone demister is markedly improved compared with the cyclone demister, especially for the droplets smaller than 4 pm. The separation efficiency of the cyclone demister increases with increase in the inlet velocity, but the effect of the inlet velocity on the separation efficiency is reduced by the coupling of the electrostatic and cyclonic fields. With increase in the ratio of cylinder length to diameter, the contribution of the electric field to the separation is getting more and more important compared with that of the swirl field. This indicates that the electric field would well compensate for the insufficient separation efficiency of small droplets through the centrifugal settling.
