•Dynamic recovery is the main soften mechanism of Be-38wt.%6061Al alloy during uniaxial compression.•Dispersion strengthening is the main deformation mechanism.•45°adiabatic shear and interfacial debonding are the typical compression failure modes.•450 °C and 0.01 s−1 is the optimum deformation parameter with best microstructure consistency and uniform alloying elements distribution.
