•Mg, N-codoped carbon quantum dots (Mg, N-CQDs) were prepared from lignin.•Mg, N-CQDs could emit green fluorescence with a quantum yield (QYs) up to 46.38 %.•Mg, N-CQDs displayed a sensitive response to pH values of their solutions.
