Role of abiotic factors in Nothofagus pumilio forest mortality: The sensitivity of ecotones

•Nothofagus pumilio mortality is strongly related to elevation, followed by precipitation.•Dead patches are located in an ecotonal altitudinal strip: the treeline ecotone.•Dead patches are located in a longitudinal ecotone within the west-east rainfall gradient.•Decreasing rainfall and increasing temperatures were recorded.
