•This article provides the reader with an opportunity to approach institutional crisis in a structured manner.•Multiple models are evaluated and adapted for use by the surgeon leader to breed resilience.•The management models provide a pictorial and conceptual representation of how to manage crisis in a multi-dimensional manner.•Surgeon leaders can use these strategies, developed by non-medical organisations, to augment medical management during crisis.
