•Superhydrophilicity was converted to superhydrophobicity on carbon-high fly ash.•ZnO nanoplates grew on carbon-high fly ash to form a micro-nano structure.•Excellent water contact angle of ∼156.2° was achieved by stearic acid modification.•Water repellency could be better by adjusting the conditions of reaction and aging.
