•A novel SLM derived grain boundary engineering (GBE) strategy was proposed and investigated.•The obtained GBE Co-Cr alloy had 81.47% special grain boundaries and accompanied SIMT phenomenon.•The obtained GBE Co-Cr alloy has less stress corrosion cracking susceptibility and high ductility in corrosive environment
