Salinity Durable Self-Healing Hydrogels As Functional Biomimetic Systems Based On The Intercalation Of Polymer Ions Into Mica

Self-healing hydrogels were prepared in water via the intercalation of cationic substituents of polymer chains into the interlayers of mica, a layered inorganic compound. The obtained materials showed high tolerance to various environmental conditions, whereas their self-healing properties were not affected even under high salinity conditions. Since the human body contains high salt concentrations, the enhanced mechanical strength and durability of the prepared self-healing hydrogels under these conditions can be exploited for their application as artificial biomaterials, including skins, muscles, and cartilages, to heal injuries similarly as the human body.
