•A look-up table of features and classifier in heterogeneous landscape was summarized.•Feature-optimization had great potential in regions with more heterogeneous pixels.•The optimum features and classifiers were sensitive to landscape heterogeneity.•The impact of configurational heterogeneity on textural features was significant.•Compositional heterogeneity performed better on the selection of spectral features.
