•Mice physiologically exhibit both central sleep apneas and obstructive sleep apneas.•Obstructive sleep apneas appear almost exclusively during rapid-eye-movement-sleep.•Obstructive sleep apneas are prevalent in Ts65Dn, a mouse model of Down syndrome.•Mice models help to understand the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing.
