摘要
This article highlights the question of the relation of linguistic phenomena of arbitrariness and iconicity in the constitution of Libras lexical items, seeking to reflect possible changes, variations or evolutions considering the first record of the iconographic dictionary in the 19th century. The historical record of the Brazilian Sign Language, henceforth Libras, dates from the 19th century, with the iconographic dictionary, reproduced by Flausino Jose da Gama, as a means of disseminating and disseminating sign language. After this first registration, other dictionaries and handbooks were designed to meet different objectives, sometimes to teach a language to the deaf, sometimes to establish communication and sometimes to integrate into society. The recognition of the Brazilian Sign Language as a natural language and its regulation at national level is the result of the 21st century, so Libras still has a long investigative course in the various areas to be explored. In the area of linguistics what urges us to research are the linguistic concepts of arbitrariness and iconicity, since for many the fact that some lexical items refer to form gives an illusory interpretation that any sign in Libras is iconic. These concepts are being investigated in various sign languages, both East and West, to better understand the structure and formation of sign languages. Thus, the debate on iconicity and arbitrariness will guide our discussion on the relation of these linguistic phenomena in the constitution of Libras.
