The Application Of Microorganisms In Reducing Roadway Runoff Pollution

This paper reviews application of microorganisms in reducing the roadway runoff pollution. It first identifies roadway runoff pollutants based on previous studies. These pollutants mainly fall into five categories, namely heavy metal, suspended solids (SS), persistent organic pollutants (POPS), TP and TN, and grease. In the following part, the paper introduces microbial groups that can be used to remove the above-mentioned pollutants. These microorganisms mainly include bacteria, fungus and actinomycetes. The last part of the paper recommends approaches to the application of microorganisms in removing road runoff pollutants. This paper provides innovative and efficient ways to combine microorganisms with traditional physical filtration materials, representing a new direction for controlling the roadway runoff pollution.
