Radical Vaginal Surgery: Friedrich Schauta

This work purpose is to trace path of radical surgery over the years: from the dawn up to the precise affirmation of the technique by the two of the greatest undisputed masters: Friedrich Schauta and Ernst Wertheim. In particular we analyzed Schauta's biography considering his training, his affirmation in Vienna. his relations with colleagues and students, first of all Ernst Wertheim. We underlined points of contact and divergence between two personalities: the calm, thoughtful and authoritative master on one side. the sanguine disciple on the other. We focused first case data, first congressional discussions of the embryonic data obtained: doubts and perplexities of procedures that would have been become the standard in the following years. Finally a series of images regarding Schauta's life and works is presented.
