Non-ionic epoxy and methacrylatesilanes were adsorbed onto E-glass fibres from aqueous Solutions between pH = 4 and pH = 7 at low concentrations. The analyses used zeta potential. contact angle, DRIFT and XPS measurements. At extremely low deposition solution concentrations (<0.005 wt-%) the silanes were sparsely deposited with the organic functionality outermost, resulting in an incompletely covered hydrophilic and acidic surface.At higher deposition solution concentrations the surface consisted mainly of Si-O-Si groups from the condensed silane. The silane appeared to deposit preferentially onto calcium sites on the E-glass surface.The epoxy functional silane was shown to have both diol and carbonyl functionality's at the surface due to initial hydrolysis of the epoxy to diol followed by oxidation of a portion of the diol to acid.
