A novel and rapid method for Agrobacterium-mediated production of stably transformed Cannabis sativa L. plants

•Development of transgenic plants is an elusive landmark in Cannabis sativa L. breeding.•Different explants, media, and kanamycin concentrations were tested in six varieties.•Transformation with A. tumefaciens was successful for all types of explants.•Hypocotyls proved to be the most useful explants, reaching a 5% of transformation rate.•Our protocol allows obtaining transgenic and genetically edited plants of C. sativa.
