Metformin Effects On Markers Of Glycemic Index And Serum Lipids In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus On Insulin Therapy

Metformin is the first line of treatment for hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus however, due to the chronicity of the disease, many patient ends up with insulin therapy. Fifty patients with type 2 diabetes on insulin therapy without metformin were included in this study received metformin maximum dose (2000 mg per day followed for 3 months). There is significant decrease of hemoglobin A1c, triglyceride, total cholesterol while high density lipoprotein- cholesterol increased after 3 months treatment with metformin. In conclusion, metformin and insulin showed beneficial effect on glycemic control and serum lipids in patient with type 2 diabetes.
