•Performance of multi-holed orifice plates is evaluated in developing flow regimes.•Pressure loss coefficient is a strong function of EDR in self-similarity regimes.•Pressure loss coefficient decays parabolically with the fourth power of EDR.•Pressure drop is a strong function of porosity followed by flow rate.•Q rises with the square root of pressure loss and quadratically with the EDR.
