A high rate and long-cycle-life anode based on micrometer-sized Pb powder for sodium-ion batteries

•A microstructured Pb anode material prepared for use in sodium-ion batteries.•High reversible capacities obtained: 370 and 198 mAh g−1 at 12.8 C and 25.6 C.•Excellent performance a result of the formation of nanometer-thick fibers of Pb.•Pulverization of Pb particles during charge–discharge is followed by self-healing.•Restructuring improves mechanical performance and electron conduction pathways.
