•Cationic iridium(III) complexes bearing fluorinated Ar-BIAN ligands were synthesized in good yields.•Molecular structures of all three iridium(III) complexes were confirmed through a single-crystal XRD analysis.•Photo-physical properties of complexes were studied.•Electrochemical properties of the complexes were investigated.
