•Pure and (La, Gd) modified SnO2 prepared via sol-gel method.•Decrease in average crystallite size from 14 nm to 10 nm on co-doping into SnO2 host.•Presence of oxygen vacancies confirmed by PL studies.•Weak ferromagnetism was observed in (La, Gd) modified SnO2.
