•Sarekuobu (Chinese Altay) is selected to evaluate gold accumulation in the metavolcanic-hosted orogenic gold deposits.•Four generations of pyrite covering seafloor sedimentation and orogeny-related metamorphism are identified.•PyIIIa and PyIIIb in auriferous vein host economic gold concentrations up to 16 ppm and 426 ppm, respectively.•Sulfur isotope record the progressively enhanced thermal sulfate reduction (TSR) contribution for ore fluids and gold origin.
