•Elevated [CO2] increased peanut photosynthesis by 58% and yield by 39%.•Elevated [CO2] reduced leaf nitrogen content by 16%.•Elevated [CO2] increased leaf-level transpiration efficiency by 73%.•There was minimal photosynthetic down-regulation to elevated [CO2].•Elevated [CO2] reduced the negative effects of water stress on peanut.
