Cationic polyelectrolyte induced formation of CaCO3/polymer composite thin films via a biomimetic process

•CaCO3 crystal thin films were biomimically developed using cationic polyelectrolyte.•The CaCO3 crystal thin films show regular polarizing patterns under polarizing optical microscopy.•The thin films surface morphology can be tuned by changing the concentrations of the cationic polyelectrolyte.
