•Material removal energy was studied in ultraprecision machining (UM) of Ti6Al4V;•Energy cost in cutting of equiaxial alloy is higher than martensitic alloy;•The specific cutting energy of UM is almost same as the conventional machining;•Material removal energy is highly affected by cutting depths and spindle speeds;•Material removal energy is slightly affected by feedrates.
