First of all, we would like to thank Schmitt et al for their comments on our paper "Patients with breakthrough tick-borne encephalitis suffer a more severe clinical course and display extensive magnetic resonance imaging changes" and for initiating a discussion. The concerns may result from a misinterpretation of the purpose of our paper. We did not aim at proving or refuting tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine effectiveness.
