•The availability of non-prescribed BUP-NX increased in Vancouver between 2014 and 2020.•This rise in BUP-NX availability was not associated with an increase in use.•Availability was associated with variables suggestive of more severe substance use.•BUP-NX is a first line treatment option, but may not be desirable to all patients.
