Linear and nonlinear associations between the sleep environment, presleep conditions, and sleep in adolescence: moderation by race and socioeconomic status

•The sleep environment and presleep conditions relate to adolescent sleep problems.•Presleep environment, worries, and arousal show nonlinear relations with sleepiness.•Some relations with sleep/wake problems were stronger among Black adolescents.•Family and somatic concerns relate to sleep/wake problems only for lower SES youth.
