SHSE: A subspace hybrid sampling ensemble method for software defect number prediction

•Proposing a novel subspace hybrid sampling ensemble method called SHSE.•Comparing with five sampling-based models and four zero-inflated/hurdle models.•Considering both within-project and cross-project defect number prediction scenarios.•Experimental results on 27 datasets with statistical testing show the superiority.
