•PECVD SiON and SiONP coatings significantly enhanced anodized-Ti surface bioactivity.•Strong interfacial adhesion between SiON/SiONP coatings and the Ti substrate.•SiONP coating increase surface coverage of carbonated hydroxyapatite (∼ 40%).•SiON and SiONP are promising as bioactive surface coatings for Ti implants.
