•The anticonvulsant Fenfluramine and its (+)-isomer modulate the sigma-1 receptor.•Fenfluramine or (+)-Fenfluramine synergize with neurosteroids.•Progesterone blocked the Fenfluramine and (+)-Fenfluramine effects.•5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors interact with Fenfluramine and (+)-Fenfluramine effects on memory.•Neuro(active) steroids may play a role in the antiepileptic action of Fenfluramine.
