•This European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation study evaluated the role of maternal donors in haploidentical transplantation for leukemia.•Maternal donors provided lower relapse incidence in T cell-depleted and in a limited series of unmanipulated (in vivo T cell-depleted) transplantations.•Maternal donors provided better graft-versus-host disease/relapse-free survival in T cell-depleted transplantations.
