•The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with changes in the use of “party drugs”.•Overall use declined, but distinct proportions maintained or increased consumption.•Perceiving substance use as coping strategy was associated with elevated drug use.•Price, quality, and supply of “party drugs” seem mostly unaffected by the pandemic.•Social and mood-related motivators declined; boredom as use motivation increased.
