Understanding clinical communication about mood disturbance symptoms among breast cancer patients: A mixed methods analysis

•Breast cancer patients have high distress, yet clinical communication about mood is infrequent.•Clinical discussions about mood symptoms were more frequent in younger women and those without metastatic disease.•Odds of discussing mood symptoms increased with symptom severity.•Cancer-related anxiety was among the most common symptom discussed.•Women with metastatic disease, in treatment, or with mild mood symptoms may be at higher risk of inadequate discussions.
