Presentation of CaseA two-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, and hepatosplenomegaly.The boy had been born of an uncomplicated full-term pregnancy and delivery, with a birth weight of 3.5 kg. He was in excellent health until two or three weeks before admission, when a cough and coryza developed. One week before admission, a physician diagnosed otitis media and prescribed amoxicillin, with improvement of the symptoms; the child was playful and happy, although he remained warm to the touch.
