•As shown previously, MDD diagnosis went with a reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA).•Low RSA went with high values in anxiety-related indicators, and low extraversion.•Low RSA went with high concentrations of several pro-inflammatory cytokines.•Influencing vagal activity or pro-inflammatory factors may be of therapeutic value.
