Usually, the thickness of coalbed is below ten meters in east Ordos basin, so it is difficult to predict the thickness of coalbed. Since the determination of coalbed thickness is one of main task for exploration, in this paper, we probed into how to apply AVO to estimate the thickness of coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. Firstly a set of models with different thickness of thin coalbed are made, then, AVO gathers are modeled with reflectivity method, after that, AVO attributes are analyzed for the thickness prediction of coalbed. Based on the analysis, we set up a workflow to estimate the thickness of coalbed, which provides a meaningful guide and a theoretical evidence for detecting CBM reservoirs.
