摘要

In this paper we introduce Active Dependency Mapping (ADM), a method for establishing dependency relations among a set of interdependent services. Consider the old expression among sysadmins: the way to discover who is using a server is to “turn it off and see who complains.” ADM takes the same approach to dependency mapping. We directly establish dependency relationships between entities in an ecosystem of interacting services by instrumenting a user-facing application, and systematically blocking access to other entities, observing which blocks impact performance.
