Chapter 15. Electrochemical Methods for Environmental Remediation

Electrochemical technologies have attracted significant interest owing to the tremendous contributions to environmental issues, such as the abatement of organic and inorganic pollutants in waters and even inactivation of microorganisms. Electrochemical processes can be applied for environmental remediation in which various physical–chemical properties are involved in determining the performance of the treatment. This chapter provides an overview of the application of electrochemical technologies to different types of waters for the elimination of organic pollutants and water disinfection. Advantages and disadvantages of and new trends in electrochemical technologies are discussed. A prospective relationship between electrochemical systems and renewable energy-based systems is also considered.
