Coding of Temporal Information

The auditory system requires coding of temporal information as the timescales of biologically relevant information range from microseconds to many seconds. The sensory organ, cochlear nuclei as well as higher auditory signals integrate and compare auditory signals over time to extract sound features such as offsets and amplitude modulation. This chapter relates the auditory temporal processing tasks of temporal resolution, temporal integration and temporal abstraction to their underlying cellular, synaptic and network mechanisms.
