Investigation of Switched Capacitor Quasi-Z-Source DC-DC Converter for E-Trike Battery Charger

In the development and implementation of electric vehicle (EV), proper design of charging infrastructure is required. The solar-based EV charger requires a DC-DC converter for producing continuous and ripple-free output. For this, the quasi-impedance-source DC-DC boost converter (QZSC) is preferred as it has better performance and improved efficiency at low duty ratio compared to the conventional boost converter. Therefore, this paper investigates switched capacitor QZSC (SC-QZSC). This converter is designed, evaluated, and compared against the conventional QZSC. The parameters analyzed are voltage gain, network voltage stress, and switch voltage stress. From the investigation, it is implied that the proposed SC-QZSC has better performance and hence it is suited for the E-Trike battery charging. Simulation and analysis are done in the MATLAB/SIMULINK. A laboratory model is rigged up to validate the simulation results.
